Alcohol can raise blood pressure, especially when consumed in excess.
Short-term effects: Even moderate drinking can cause a temporary increase in blood pressure.
Long-term effects: Regular heavy drinking (more than 1–2 standard drinks per day) can lead to persistent high blood pressure hypertension .
Mechanism: Alcohol affects the central nervous system, increases stress hormone levels, and can impair blood vessel function — all contributing to elevated blood pressure.
Recommended limits (general guideline):
Men: Up to 2 standard drinks per day
Women: Up to 1 standard drink per day
Even within these limits, some individuals may be more sensitive to alcohol’s effects.
